Preparing for Worlds 2023

Hello, Cut or Tap readers. I hope you have been enjoying our new roster of great players who now write for my website. Although I have taken more of a backseat role in Cut or Tap’s content lately, I still have some information and advice to give to those going to Worlds. In this article, I cover the patterns we can can observe from previous World Championships to better understand what will happen this year, as well as some deck ideas and a couple of lists that I am highly considering playing.

First, let’s go back to Worlds and NAIC last year. Recall that Arceus/Flying Pikachu actually won both events. Furthermore, the same archetype placed second at Worlds 2022, which helps us to realize that the archetype doing so well was not a fluke. This is counterintuitive, because one would think that a deck that wins NAIC will be heavily countered at the next event (Worlds). So, what happened? Why was Arc Pika still the best play? Well, people simply continued to play the decks they had played before, and did not properly adjust.
