Most Impactful Cards Lost to the 2023 Standard Format Rotaion

Hello everyone! This is Nick Moffitt bringing you my list of the most impactful cards we will be losing to the Standard format rotation this year. Like many of you, I feel that our current Standard format has dragged on for far too long, and I am ready to experiment with something fresh and new. This year’s rotation is pretty unique. Generally, we have rotation in August, either just before or just after the World Championships. This year however, there was no Standard format rotation at this time, and it was instead delayed until April with the release of Scarlet and Violet.

I will first go through each set we are losing to rotation, and pick out all of the most impactful cards from each one. These are not in any particular order; I simply picked out the cards from each set that I believe to have been the most impactful since their release, with a slight bias towards cards that have remained relevant in more recent formats. Therefore, I will not be putting much emphasis on old VMAX Pokemon, which may have been strong when they were released but became rather irrelevant as more sets came out. Essentially, this list is not meant to be all-encapsulating of every card ever played in the Standard format while it was legal, but rather focusing on those cards which would be the most impactful moving forward if they were not being lost to rotation. When building decks in formats freshly after a rotation occurs, it is important to remember what cards that may have been mainstays in the previous format are no longer available. This is not only important when building our own decks, but also for knowing what your opponents are capable of. After reading this article, I would encourage you all to have a look at every card that has rotated, so you can keep in the back of your mind that those cards should no longer be considered when playing games in the new format.

I will finish by giving my overall ranking for the top 10 cards that we will be losing to the Standard format rotation this year.

There is a lot to cover, so let’s dive right in!
