Noctowl’s Time to Shine? A Look at Flareon and Tera Box

Hello, Cut or Tap readers! Last month, the World Championships took place in Anaheim, and there was a lot to take away. Gholdengo was everywhere, Charizard made a reappearance, and Grimmsnarl seemed to almost disappear. With Monterrey, Frankfurt, and Pittsburgh on the horizon in the next couple of weeks in the same format as Worlds, it’s a good time to revisit some old decks that have a potential to emerge in the current metagame.

The card that I believe has a chance for a comeback? Noctowl. Recently, Noctowl has most commonly been relegated to Raging Bolt. Tera Box was a popular choice following rotation, but did poorly in an Atlanta metagame that was designed to beat it due to the hype, and never fully recovered, eventually becoming almost nonexistent when Shaymin released prior to NAIC. Flareon emerged a bit later, and was fairly popular through NAIC, but also has seen a dip in play. With the dominance that Gholdengo is showing in this format due to strong matchups into most of the top decks, though, it could be a great opportunity for both of these decks to return to a reasonable portion of the metagame thanks to their favorability into Gholdengo. I will cover both Tera Box and Flareon, and discuss what they must do to adapt to the current format, as well as their strengths and weaknesses.
