The international release of the Mega Evolution set is still a month away, but for players (like myself) whose first major event of the season will be in the new format, now is as good a time as any to start considering all the possibilities that the set offers. There are a ton of new impactful cards, and in this article I have chosen a few of them that I believe are promising above the rest, and have the most wide-reaching applications to explore in-depth.
Lillie’s Determination
This card is undoubtedly one of the most powerful Supporter cards ever printed. The trio of Professor Juniper/Sycamore (identical to Professor’s Research), N (Iono with a regular shuffle), and Professor Oak’s New Theory/Cynthia (regular shuffle-draw-six) have won the world Championships in both 2012 and 2018 already, and Lillie’s Determination will exist in the same trio as a strict upgrade on the previous effects.
Lillie’s Determination is also one of my personal favorite cards released in a while. Which moment each player enters the prize race is a significant predictor of the outcome of games, so bonus effects that are dependent on a player not having taken any prize cards can add complexity to those decisions. Whether or not to take an early Knock Out now depends on whether or not you can afford the downgrade in consistency that you’ll get from Lillie’s Determination.
