Gardevoir has dominated the format since the rotation of F-block, but with the recent release of Marnie’s Grimmsnarl ex, some have been questioning the deck’s viability moving forward. Currently, Gardevoir is one of my top three picks for NAIC, along with Dragapult Dusknoir and Joltik Box, mainly due to my comfort with the archetype and its fantastic matchup spread.
Portland Recap and List Theory
As you may know, I recently got Top 8 at the Portland Regional Championships with a Gardy list reliant on Technical Machine: Evolution. I decided to play this list over something more common like Brent Tonnisson’s, which I had played in Milwaukee, as I felt the Pult Noir matchup was not very favored, and benching Cleffa to get out of dead hands felt really bad in a lot of situations. To remedy this, I started with the Brazilian 60 from Santiago, which utilized a 3-3-3 Gardevoir line, TM: Evos, and Arvens, in order to set up two Gardevoir ex almost every game, which Dragapult decks currently cannot handle. With only a 3-2-2 list, and no non-item search, Brent’s list struggled to get set up before Pult Noir could wipe the entire Ralts line from your board. The other advantage of this list was Arven making more hands live, as you could get Secret Box to get a Supporter for the next turn. With this, my two issues from Brent’s 60 were solved, so I moved forward to refining the list they played.
Here is what I ended up on:
